It’s nice to have if I’m looking for a quick laugh or want to revisit some of the pages, which I’ve already done since my first read. I bought a physical copy as opposed to picking Fangs up at the library, and I’m glad I own it now. There were equal parts heartwarming and comedic moments throughout, and it made for an excellent pick-me-up and quick read during spooky season. I’ve read many of Sarah Andersen’s comics in the past, but these were by far my favorite. I’m not typically one for romances, but as soon as I learned of Fangs, I had to give it a try. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Starring relatively unknown actresses Sidney Flanigan and Talia Ryder as cousins and friends Autumn and Skylar, Pennsylvanian natives who must venture to New York City when Autumn becomes pregnant and decides she is not ready to have a child of her own, Always is a road trip movie without any of the laughs or follies that are usually associated with such a narrative and Hittman and her actresses keep the film imbedded in an almost documentary like realism that may sap your energy but keeps you gripped throughout as Autumn's life changing decision draws closer. About as far from a feel good movie as you're likely to find, Never Rarely Sometimes Always is not a film made to cheer its audience up or provide entertainment in the typical sense of the word but Eliza Hittman's career defining feature is a powerful and quietly spoken drama that deserves plaudits for its raw and uncompromising look at both teen pregnancy and abortion, in what is often considered a taboo subject matter for features. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The book drafts the journey of Anil Swarup as a civil servant who survived despite being politically incorrect. I finally had a resource that could tell me whether angels are boys or girls, why God would create the devil, and what Adam and Eve were thinking when they ate that fruit! The only thing that bothered me was that I didn’t know who wrote all of this and why I should simply accept it as true. It didn’t take me long to find a clear and concise answer to my question. To my surprise, the book was easy to navigate. ![]() My father, knowing the answer but thinking it was time for me to get over my fear of words like “ecumenical” and “inviolable,” handed me a Catechism and told me to figure it out myself. I recall wondering what the difference is between a priest and a deacon. It wasn’t until I was eight or nine did I need to personally open the work on my own. Perhaps it was the Latin that scared me away or those intimidating numbers before each paragraph, but for some reason, I always considered it too complicated a book for me to read myself. I’ll never forget the day I discovered the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, Chbosky has returned with an epic work of literary horror, years in the making, whose grand scale and rich emotion redefine the genre. The deal offered to James Keene Black Bird showed without making many alterations, as farfetched an idea as it sounds - which is probably why the real events of Black Bird made for such a compelling miniseries. To do that, the FBI really did decide to recruit a disgraced ex-football star to befriend Hall in prison. Despite being sent to prison for the kidnap of Roach, the FBI believed Larry Hall was a serial killer who had murdered many more young women and was determined to get him to confess and keep him behind bars. The similarities between the movie and the Black Bird true story don't end there though. The Larry Hall Black Bird story was 100% correct with its portrayal of this, despite how much it seems like it was a twist of fate created for a movie narrative. ![]() ![]() Larry Hall's brother Gary Hall was the "normal" one, and although he originally defended his brother, Gary Hall eventually helped the FBI draw confessions out of his twin sibling. Larry Hall was born in Wabash, Indiana, and as Black Bird correctly showed, has a twin - Gary Hall, played by Jake McLaughlin. ![]() |
